Reebok Boston Track Club professional athlete Amy-Eloise Markovc, the British 2-mile indoor record holder and All-American at Washington, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss competing for Great Britain in the 3,000 meters March 4-5 at the European Indoor Championships in Torun, Poland. Markovc set the national indoor 2-mile record with her 9:30.69 effort Feb. 3 at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix at Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island, N.Y., eclipsing the 2007 standard of 9:32.0 achieved by Joanne Pavey. Markovc shares the significance of making her first senior roster for Great Britain after previously being selected for four teams at the U-18, U-20 and U-23 levels in both cross country and track. She reminisces about her 2013 trip to Bydgoszcz, Poland, and placing 21st at the World U-20 Cross Country Championships, finishing as the third scorer for Great Britain in the 6-kilometer race. Markovc revisits making her first national team at any level since 2017, when she placed fourth overall in the U-23 6.28-kilometer race at the SPAR European Cross Country Championships in Slovakia, helping Great Britain capture the team title. She speaks about joining teammates Rosie Clarke, Verity Ockenden and Amelia Quirk among the 29 athletes in the 3,000 field, along with the challenges of competing in consecutive days in the prelims and final. Markovc reflects on the success during the past year of several Reebok Boston Track Club athletes under the guidance of coach Chris Fox, and how the marathon performances in December of Martin Hehir, Colin Bennie and Paige Stoner inspired her and the entire group, and how it has continued to provide motivation during the winter indoor season. She examines the benefits of training longer distances with Stoner and Abbie McNulty, along with middle-distance events with Josette Norris. Markovc, who won the women's 6-kilometer race Nov. 14 at the XC Town USA Meet of Champions at the LaVern Gibson course in Terre Haute, Ind., analyzes her future in cross country. She hopes to race for Great Britain again at the 2022 World Championships, potentially in cross country in New South Wales and track at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., after trying to qualify to join a strong British women's distance lineup expected to compete at the Tokyo Olympics this summer.
